Here are our 8 favourite beaches, spread across the island's four coasts, with what really matters for each: swimming, atmosphere, where to eat, where to park and what to watch out for. 1. Île aux Cerfs: the most spectacular water in Mauritius
There's no point beating around the bush: Île aux Cerfs has some of the most beautiful water in the Indian Ocean. Clear turquoise, white sand and small coves where you lose track of time. To enjoy it in peace, go early in the morning and walk away from the main beach: a few minutes on foot is enough to find an almost empty cove.
Getting there: by boat only. Water taxis leave from the Trou d'Eau Douce jetty (parking on site). If you are staying on the Anahita estate, the island is right opposite: The Bay Club offers boat access.
Lunch: several beach restaurants and bars on the island; in high season, book or arrive before noon.
Activities: beginner snorkelling, parasailing, water skiing, boat trip to the Grande Rivière Sud-Est waterfall.
Nearby: Île aux Cerfs Golf, designed by Bernhard Langer, and The Bay Club at Anahita with Anahita Golf.
2. Belle Mare: miles of white sand
At sunrise, the light turns the lagoon into a golden mirror. Belle Mare is one of the longest beaches on the island: perfect for walking, running or a quiet swim, far from the crowds. The water is clear and shallow, protected by the reef.
Lunch: the hotel restaurants of Belle Mare, including those at LUX* Belle Mare (booking recommended), and a few snack stands along the coast road.
Parking: plenty of free public car parks along the beach.
From Anahita: about 20 minutes by car, the go-to big beach of the east coast.
3. Trou-aux-Biches: the best beach for snorkelling
The water is calm and shallow, and the coral can be reached straight from the beach. It is the ideal place for a first snorkelling session with children, and one of the most pleasant beaches in the north-west in the late afternoon.
Lunch: small restaurants and snack stands along the coast road; Grand Baie and its many restaurants are 10 minutes away.
Parking: public car park near the main entrance.
On site: mask and fin rental, glass-bottom boat trips.
4. Mont Choisy: the long, peaceful beach of the north
Mont Choisy is a long arc of sand lined with casuarina trees, very popular with Mauritian families at weekends. On weekdays it is particularly peaceful, and the shade of the trees means you can spend the day without a parasol.
Lunch: local food trucks (dholl puri, ice cream, Mauritian snacks) and Grand Baie restaurants a few minutes away.
Parking: lots of spaces along the coast road.
Where to stay: Mont Choisy and Trou-aux-Biches are the closest beaches to our villas in Grand Baie.
5. Flic-en-Flac: the lively beach of the west
For its lively atmosphere, spectacular sunsets and wide choice of water sports. The west coast is the most sheltered from the wind in the southern winter: from June to September, this is often where the sea is calmest.
Lunch: Zub Express, a well-known local spot, and the restaurants around Wolmar, quieter in the evening.
Parking: large free car parks.

6. Le Morne: the ultimate postcard

Lunch: Le Morne hotel restaurants (Paradis, Dinarobin, LUX* Le Morne), booking recommended; Mauritian kiosks for fried fish, samosas and gâteaux piments (chilli fritters).
Parking: several car parks along the beach.
Watch out: one area is reserved for kitesurfing, respect the access points and swim outside that zone.
7. Saint-Félix: the wild beauty of the south
This is not a beach for long swims, the sea is rougher here, but a place to walk, unwind, listen to the waves and take beautiful photos. The south is the most unspoilt coast of Mauritius.
Lunch: C Beach Club (Bel Ombre, about 10 minutes), elegant atmosphere; Chez Rosy at Gris-Gris (Souillac, about 15 minutes), a southern institution.
Parking: easy-access public car park.
Bring: there is little shade, so a hat and sunscreen are essential.
8. La Cambuse: the last great wild beach
A raw, vast and uncrowded beach a few minutes from the airport: ideal if you want to escape the busy spots, or for a last swim before your flight home.
Lunch: no restaurant on site, head to Blue Bay (about 10 minutes), whose marine park is perfect for snorkelling.
Parking: informal parking by the beach.
Watch out: currents can be strong on some days, check before swimming.

The best base depends on the beaches you want. For Île aux Cerfs and Belle Mare, the east coast is unbeatable: the Anahita estate at Beau Champ faces Île aux Cerfs and gives access to the beaches, restaurants and spa of The Bay Club at Anahita, as well as Anahita Golf (Ernie Els). For Trou-aux-Biches and Mont Choisy, choose the north and Grand Baie.
