If there is a paradise for kitesurfers, Mauritius is one of them: turquoise lagoons protected by the reef, steady trade winds for much of the year, warm water and well-known schools. Beginners, improving riders and wave lovers all find their spot here.

When to go kitesurfing in Mauritius
The kite season follows the south-east trade winds: they blow mainly from May to November, most consistently from June to September, usually between 15 and 25 knots. You can ride all year round, but the wind is less reliable in the southern summer (December to April), the hot and humid season. 1. Le Morne: the legendary spot of Mauritius
At the foot of Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO World Heritage mountain, the Le Morne lagoon is the island’s most famous spot. Inside the reef, the water is flat and shallow: ideal for learning and progressing. Further out, the One Eye wave draws some of the world’s best riders.
Level: beginners and intermediates in the lagoon; One Eye for advanced riders only (powerful wave breaking on the reef).
Schools: several schools on Le Morne beach, including ION Club, Kite Globing and Son of Kite.
Access: parking at Le Morne public beach, kite zone at the end of the beach.
Watch out: respect the kite zone and wear reef shoes (coral).
2. Bel Ombre: the unspoilt spot of the south
Less crowded than Le Morne, Bel Ombre offers a large lagoon and, further out, a left-hand wave near the Saint-Martin pass. The spot works with south, south-east and east winds; east wind can be gustier.
Level: the lagoon suits beginners with a school; the wave is for advanced riders only.
School: Kite Globing, based at C Beach Club, the only school on the spot, which keeps it uncrowded.

3. Poste Lafayette: the safest spot on the east coast
On the east coast, the wind blows in from the sea (onshore): if anything goes wrong, you drift back towards the beach, which makes the spot reassuring. The water is shallow a few meters from shore, with flat-water zones for jumping and some waves further out for experienced riders.
Level: ideal for learning and progressing; waves further out for advanced riders.
Season: June to November, when the wind is most reliable on the east coast.
Nearby: La Maison d’Été, a boutique hotel on the lagoon.
From Anahita: about 40 minutes by car.
4. Anse la Raie: the northern spot
In the north of the island, near Cap Malheureux, Anse la Raie is the most popular spot in the north. The bay offers flat water, ideal for working on transitions and first jumps. The north is less windy than the south: the wind blows mainly from June to September and can be gusty.
Level: beginners with a school up to advanced riders.
Schools: several schools, including ION Club Anse la Raie.
Nearby: the Lagoon Attitude hotel, right on the bay.

5. Palmar and Belle Mare: the lagoon closest to Anahita
At Palmar, the wind comes in at an angle from the sea (about 45°) over a narrow, shallow lagoon with several square kilometres of flat water: ideal for learning and jumping. At neighbouring Belle Mare, the beach is trickier without an east or south-east wind.
Level: beginners and intermediates.
Season: a school operates here from April to November; outside that period the spot is less reliable.
Lunch: Salt of Palmar and the Belle Mare hotels.

Bonus: the Île aux Cerfs lagoon and Pointe d’Esny
Opposite the Anahita estate, the Trou d’Eau Douce and Île aux Cerfs lagoon offers vast areas of flat, shallow water, very popular in a south to south-east wind; the best area, along the reef, is reached by boat. Further south, Pointe d’Esny, near Mahébourg, has an onshore wind and fairly flat water. Long downwinders from one spot to another should only be done with a guide and a safety boat.

It depends on the spots you are aiming for. On the east coast, the Anahita estate at Beau Champ puts Palmar 20 minutes away, Poste Lafayette 40 minutes away and the Île aux Cerfs lagoon right opposite. For Anse la Raie, choose the north and Grand Baie. Le Morne and Bel Ombre are day trips from the east (about 1 hour 30 minutes).
